The Sun: Taliban invited al-Qaeda to create a cradle of jihad in Afghanistan

Triumphant Taliban leaders have offered refuge to the al-Qaeda terrorist group outside of Afghanistan. This is stated in the report of the US Department of Defense.

The defense department’s report says that all the achievements of the 20-year US military campaign, which became Washington’s longest overseas operation, has been completely destroyed: the Taliban have returned to power and now they have a safe place where terrorist attacks can be planned.

“The Taliban continued to maintain their relationship with al-Qaeda providing a safe haven for a terrorist group in Afghanistan,” the document says.

According to Emily Winterbotham, Director of the Terrorism and Conflict Division of the Royal United Services Institute, there are many different factions outside of Afghanistan, but al-Qaeda is the most worrisome from an international point of view.
