The Taliban* won the war in Afghanistan, so the EU will have to talk to him, but this does not imply official EU recognition of the new regime, said EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell.
“The Taliban* won the war, so we will have to talk to them in order to start a dialogue as soon as possible in order to prevent a humanitarian and potential migration catastrophe, as well as a humanitarian crisis”, – EuroNews quotes Borrell.
The head of EU diplomacy added that the dialogue with Taliban militants* does not imply official recognition of the new regime by Brussels in the near future. According to him, every effort should be made to evacuate 400 Afghans who worked for the European Union.
“We will deal with the Afghan authorities as they are, while maintaining a natural vigilance regarding compliance with international obligations,” Borrell said.
