Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not be able to “sell” the country to his American counterpart Joe Biden because of its deplorable state, but will try to buy off the border with Russia. This assumption was made by Ukrainian journalist Yanina Sokolovska on the air of Channel One, Narodnye Novosti has reported
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that during the meeting between Zelensky and Biden in Washington, which will be held on 30 August, the sides plan to discuss economic and political issues, as well as security issues. As reported by News Front, the head of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry claims that Kiev and Washington intend to sign a bilateral agreement on defence cooperation.
According to Sokolovska, during the meeting, the Ukrainian president will once again raise objections to the “Nord Stream – 2” gas pipeline, which is located from the coast of Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea. According to experts, Kiev is fed up with the international community with its complaints against Moscow.
“What will Zelensky talk to Biden about? First and foremost, of course, is Nord Stream 2. Also, he will probably explain himself for what his people said about his intention to turn from the West to the East, towards China. I think Biden will be very interested in this. In return, Zelensky will offer the Americans, as Poroshenko did, various business opportunities”, – the journalist said.
In her opinion, statements about a possible “sale” of Ukraine sound ridiculous because Washington is not at all interested in buying a ruined country. However, Biden may be interested in the border area of Ukrainian territory.
“No one is buying anything. Ukraine will offer the US the realization of their economic and political interests. And the political one is to get as close as possible to Russia’s borders and, for example, to deploy air defence systems. But I am not sure that the United States itself is ready to deploy such systems on the territory of Ukraine. They have not yet demonstrated such intentions”, – Sokolovska concluded.
Zelensky earlier said that he expected from the meeting with Biden “specifics and understanding” and also wants “to feel support from the United States”, in particular on the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
