Taliban invite women to take part in governing Afghanistan

The Taliban* called on women to join the future government, the Associated Press reports, citing member of the movement’s cultural committee Enamullah Samangani.

“The Islamic Emirate (the self-designation of the Taliban’s governing system – ed.) does not want women to be victims. They must be in the government structure in accordance with Sharia law,” he said.

In turn, the agency Khaama Press reports that several women gathered in one of the districts of Kabul, demanding to provide them with the opportunity to join the Cabinet.

It also became known that the local TV channel Tolo News continued broadcasting with women presenters, the Taliban did not raise any objections.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov said that he had not yet seen the facts of the Taliban’s bad attitude towards women, schools for girls were operating in Kabul. At the same time, the media wrote that in the capital, after the change of power, they began to paint over images of women on the walls of beauty salons.

Several weeks ago, against the background of the withdrawal of the American contingent from Afghanistan, the situation in the country sharply deteriorated: the Taliban launched an offensive on large cities and quickly seized all border crossings; on Sunday, the rebels entered the presidential palace.

The head of the republic, Ashraf Ghani, fled, his whereabouts are unknown. On Monday night, Taliban political office spokesman* Muhammad Naim said the 20-year war was over.
A new form of government will become clear in the near future. The Taliban do not agree to a transitional government.
