The city’s governor said he took the step to save the lives of civilians
Reuters on Sunday quoted an Afghan official in the captured city as saying that the radical Taliban had taken control of the city of Jalalabad, the administrative centre of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan.
“There are no clashes in Jalalabad now because the governor has surrendered to the Taliban. The official said the city was surrendered to save the lives of civilians”, – the report said.
After the US announced the end of the armed operation in Afghanistan and the start of the withdrawal of troops, the Taliban launched an offensive against government forces. Radicals reportedly control up to 90 percent of Afghanistan, including areas along the border with Iran, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
