The European Commission has said the urgent need to revise the norms of migration in the European Union
Margaritis Schinas, vice-president of the European Commission (EC) for the promotion of the European way of life, said on Twitter on Sunday that the situation in Afghanistan and actions of the Belarusian authorities in the field of border control require the European Union to urgently review common rules of migration and asylum, it was reported.
“To summarise in one phrase, the situation in Afghanistan and the actions of the Belarusian authorities have shown that time is running out and we cannot wait any longer to undertake the complete overhaul of European migration and asylum rules we need”, – he wrote.
The EU fears an acute migration crisis due to the risk of tens of thousands of people who cooperated with Western coalition and civilian forces during NATO and U.S. operations in Afghanistan fleeing the country. The EU believes that one of the main routes for the migration of these people into the community might be via Belarus to Lithuania.
