The staff of the Russian Consulate General was evacuated to Termez from Mazar-e-Sharif, 58 km away, for security reasons in July
The only Afghan marshal, ethnic Uzbek Abdul Rashid Dustum, has moved from the administrative centre of Balkh province, Mazar-e-Sharif, to Uzbekistan’s southernmost city, Termez, which is about 10 km from the Uzbek-Afghan border.
“On the night of Saturday to Sunday, a group of Afghans, mostly officials, military personnel and the only Afghan Marshal Abdul Rashid Dustum and his entourage, fleeing from the Taliban, who they say have occupied Mazar-e-Sharif, crossed the Uzbek-Afghan border”, – said local journalist Hamid.
According to his sources, the Afghans entered Uzbek territory through the only border crossing point between the two neighbouring countries, which is on the Friendship Bridge over the Amu Darya River between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Uzbek authorities have not yet officially confirmed information that Dustum is already in Termez.
In July, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the Russian Consulate General was evacuated to Termez from Mazar-e-Sharif, 58 km away, for security reasons.
