Against the backdrop of an active offensive by Taliban militants* Washington is in a hurry to evacuate the staff of the United States Embassy in Kabul, writes Politico.
“In a sign of deep concern permeating Washington, the embassy manager ordered staff on Friday to begin destroying documents and equipment,” a source told the publication.
It is noted that secret documents, electronics and large objects are subject to destruction – they will be crushed by a large shaft, in accordance with internal rules. In addition, any documents bearing the American flag that may be used by the Taliban* for propaganda purposes will be destroyed.
“3,000 US Marines and soldiers, along with 600 British soldiers, have begun arriving at Kabul Airport, which is expected to become a focal point in the coming days, to evacuate diplomats and citizens. They will also try to expedite the departure of Afghans who applied for visas to leave the country”, writes Politico.
According to Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, the task of the military is to evacuate up to a thousand civilians a day from Afghanistan, but in the event of an attack, “they can protect themselves and the evacuees.”
As News Front previously reported, the Taliban* captured three more provincial capitals in southern Afghanistan. In addition, the militants of the group cut off the power supply to Kabul. Politico notes that at the moment all of Europe froze in horror and is watching the development of events on the territory of the republic. According to experts, Washington did not expect the Taliban* to seize the region so quickly.
*-the Taliban is an Islamist group banned in the Russian Federation.
