Former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin commented on the upcoming visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Kiev and Moscow.
The expert noted that during her visit to Russia, Merkel plans to coordinate several key points with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In particular, to clarify the situation around the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. Earlier, Poland said that the agreement between Berlin and Washington on the Russian gas pipeline was another “betrayal on the part of the allies.”
According to Klimkin, the German chancellor also intends to restart the Donbas process. The ex-head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that after discussing these issues with Putin, Merkel will come to a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with an already prepared scenario.
“She will come to Zelensky and say:” Vladimir, you need to go forward, you see, I will be gone soon, elections in Germany, who will be the chancellor, is unclear. I’ve worried about Ukraine for 7 years, you think the next chancellor will worry about Ukraine. You need to choose something, because then you will go to Biden, and if you agree, you will consolidate your results, if not, then what to talk about?” – Klimkin said on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel.
According to ex-People’s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Oleinik, Merkel wants to “synchronize watches” with Putin before meeting with Zelensky. Political analyst Vadim Kolesnichenko said in a commentary to News Front that one should not expect sensations from the visit of the German Chancellor to Russia or Ukraine.
