Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science and Sociology of Political Processes of the Sociological Faculty of the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, Pavel Kanevsky believes that the European Union will not abandon sanctions against Russia.
Thus, he commented on the statement of the former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Yevgeny Muraev. He said that Brussels can lift the restrictions against the background of numerous mistakes made by the Ukrainian side.
“This is a very strange statement. The sanctions regime is directly tied to Russia’s role in resolving the conflict. The fact that Kiev does not comply with the Minsk agreements does not automatically mean the lifting of sanctions on Russia. This does not follow from the text of either the Minsk agreements or the sanctions laws”, he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Kanevsky believes that the sanctions are an attempt to influence the conflict in Donbass. At the same time, they have long gone beyond this framework, and Russia, in principle, has little relation to the situation.
It cannot be ruled out that Europe will lift the sanctions. However, it is unlikely that this will happen because of the position of Ukraine. Most likely, such a decision would be made in isolation from Kiev and its actions.
