Oleg Voloshin, a people’s deputy from the Opposition Platform – For Life party, said that the only way to stop the construction of the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is to break relations between Germany and the United States, RIA Novosti reports.
“That is, [the United States] just needs to squabble with the Germans, impose sanctions against German companies, moreover, sanctions of an extraterritorial nature, because American interests are not directly affected: we do not like it, therefore we are punishing you”, Voloshin said on the air of the TV channel NewsOne.
In his opinion, in this case, Washington’s actions could have long-term consequences for international relations. However, the politician stressed that interfering in the affairs of foreign states is “pure piracy” by the United States.
The construction of Nord Stream-2 is currently 99% complete. According to experts, the first gas will be sent through the pipeline in the fall of this year. Nord Stream-2 is located from the shores of Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea: the gas pipeline consists of two directions with a total capacity of about 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The United States actively opposed the construction of Nord Stream-2, as it wants to supply its own liquefied gas to Europe.
