Merkel wants to meet with Putin before visit to Kiev

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert held a briefing to announce Chancellor Angela Merkel’s plans to visit Russia

She will arrive in Moscow on August 20, two days before her visit to Kiev, RIA Novosti reports. The German head of state plans to hold talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Seibert did not announce the main topics to be raised by the leaders. He said “details of the programme” would be announced early next week.

Merkel will arrive in Ukraine on 22 August. President Vladimir Zelensky’s press secretary, Sergey Nikiforov, said that the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and the situation in Donbas would be the main issues of the meeting.

That Merkel will look into Russia before her trip to Kiev is no coincidence. Before her conversation with Zelensky, which is unlikely to be productive, she has decided to discuss the situation with the party whose opinion she cares more about. NSP2 is a project that benefits not only Russia, but also Germany. Ukraine’s hysteria and its attempts to persuade its “partners” to obstruct the launch of the pipeline will again be ignored.

Earlier, Kiev voiced another “blue dream” about sabotaging Nord Stream-2. An MP of the Opposition Platform – For Life party, Oleh Voloshyn, noted that it was destined to come true only if Berlin and Washington break off relations. And one should not hope for that.
