US says Serbia must not be allowed to expand Russian and Chinese influence in the region

The American Wilson Center, which is one of the prestigious academic organizations, in a report on solving the Kosovo problem indicated that Serbia “should not be allowed to expand the influence of Russia and China in the region”

The authors of “Strengthening Kosovo’s Sovereignty: Why It Matters and What Should Be Done” note that the West now has a unique opportunity to eliminate one of the sources of interstate tension in the Western Balkans.

It is also argued that new “U.S. and EU support is necessary to achieve the goal of independent, multi-ethnic states and societies coexisting peacefully in the Western Balkans”. According to Wilson Centre experts, Western countries have allegedly “allowed Serbia to occupy a privileged position” through multilateral diplomacy.

“Serbia ‘allows the influence of non-free states in the Western Balkans to increase,’ and that Russia and China are using this as a means to increase their own power and influence and undermine Western advantages”, – the document said.

According to the paper, renewed action to strengthen Kosovo’s sovereignty is “one of the means by which Kosovo’s partners can express their commitment to their democratic partner”. It also recommends that efforts be doubled to admit Kosovo as “a key to internal and international security” to international organisations, such as the Council of Europe, OSCE, World Health Organisation, Interpol and UNESCO”.
