Taliban fighters capture strategic town in northern Afghanistan

The Taliban have taken control of the city of Kunduz, which is located in northern Afghanistan. Its location is of strategic importance

The offensive by the Taliban was reported by the BBC. The journalists said the militants had stormed the provincial capital of the same name after fierce fighting. Kunduz is home to about 300,000 people.

“On Sunday, they seized control of the key northern city of Kunduz as well as Sar-e-Pul and Taloqan. This means five regional capitals have fallen since Friday and Kunduz was their most important achievement this year. The Taliban have said there is no ceasefire agreement with the government”, –  the BBC said.

Afghan security forces have retreated to the airport. The army continues to defend the military base area.

Highways leading to the capital Kabul and other major cities pass through Kunduz. The province is also on Afghanistan’s border with Tajikistan. The largest border crossing point on this section is already under militants’ control.

Earlier News Front reported that the Taliban have entered Zaranj city, the administrative centre of Nimroz province. The region borders Iranian territory. The approach of the militants has forced the authorities of the neighbouring country to close its borders to ensure the safety of its citizens.
