A possible decision by U.S. authorities would follow the arrival of former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in the U.S
According to TASS, Friday, CNN TV channel, citing sources in the U.S. Congress, spread information that U.S. authorities might announce a new package of sanctions against Belarus early next week.
“According to the channel, new restrictive measures against Belarus will be announced on Monday, 9 August, exactly one year after the presidential elections in the republic. The Finance Ministry, the State Department and the White House have not yet responded to TASS’ request to confirm this information and provide any details”, – the report says.
The possible decision of the American authorities will follow the visit of ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to the USA, who stated during the meeting with the Belarusian diaspora in New York that during the meetings in Washington she asked the USA administration to extend the sanctions against Minsk, but she received no specific promises.
In turn, a source familiar with the details of Tikhanovska’s visit to Washington, told TASS last week that the United States was working on new sanctions against Belarus, but refused to specify whether they were sectoral sanctions or not.
“Tikhanovska has asked for them, but the US will determine for itself what sanctions to impose”, – he added.
