Iranian Foreign Ministry calls G7 accusations of attack on Mercer Street tanker unfounded

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh has condemned the statement of the G7 countries holding the country responsible for the attack on the Mercer Street tanker, calling the accusations groundless

“We strongly condemn the baseless statement of G7 foreign ministers… which contains baseless allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran”, –  Mehr News Agency quoted Hatibzadeh as saying.

The Liberian flagged tanker Mercer Street was attacked in the Arabian Sea on July 29. The ship’s operator Zodiac Maritime is owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. The incident resulted in the deaths of two crew members, a Romanian national and a British citizen, allegedly responsible for guarding the vessel. The US blamed Iran for the drone attack on the ship in the Arabian Sea.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry later called US and British claims of Tehran’s involvement in the attacks on the Israeli tanker contradictory and unfounded.
