The plans of the European Union to introduce cross-border carbon regulation pose a threat to Russia’s national interests, Aleksandr Abelin, Assistant Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, told reporters.
He recalled that recently, the international climate agenda has been increasingly used by Western countries to protect their goods on international markets.
“For example, the EU plans provide for the introduction of cross-border carbon regulation in the near future as one of the mechanisms for fulfilling its obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement, which poses a threat to the national interests of the Russian Federation, since the EU is one of its largest trading partners. The introduction of similar measures is also being considered by the US authorities”, – Abelin said.
