Politeness is not part of the set of mandatory liberal values that Washington and Brussels are going to teach the whole world.
US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan is teaching Georgia in a mentoring tone and threatening to impose sanctions against this Transcaucasian republic if they do not carry out the reforms necessary for the US and Europe.
She made such a formidable statement after the ruling party “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia” withdrew from the Agreement on the Electoral Model, signed in December last year with the assistance of the head of the European Council Charles Michel.
Recall that an unsuccessful attempt to carry out a constitutional reform and the ensuing massive street protests prompted international partners to force more than 30 opposition parties to sit at the negotiating table, including the Georgian Dream and the United National Movement. However, Mikheil Saakashvili’s UNM and a number of small opposition parties did not sign the agreement. They have accused the ruling coalition of having ties with Moscow and are very determined to continue their struggle.
All this time, “Georgian Dream” tried to find common ground with the opposition, but the initiatives were not supported. European and American curators also closely watched the processes, but tried not to interfere. The result of the five-month “truce” was the demarche of the “dreamers” – withdrawal from the Agreement.
Representatives of the European Union also joined the American ambassador’s solo, who also insist on a radical change in the political line. Viola von Cramon, a member of a special group of MEPs to oversee its efforts to support democracy outside the EU, came to Georgia urgently and met with a number of opposition parties and non-governmental organizations, but ignored the meeting with the ruling party. During the meeting with the opposition, the EP representative threatened the Georgian authorities with depriving the financial support of the European Union and the United States.
The tone of the conversation of the American diplomat and the European emissary with the Georgian politicians was very arrogant and did not allow any objections. It should be noted that speaking in a similar tone has already become a tradition for European and American representatives. Apparently giving Georgia certain means (in fact, rather modest) in the West, they consider themselves entitled to determine the foreign internal policy of a sovereign state.
Another political crisis in Georgia is taking place against the backdrop of the exercises of the North Atlantic bloc in this Caucasian republic.
NATO is deploying units of 15 states, including 12 member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance and three NATO partner states (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine) directly near the Russian borders. The annual Agile Spirit maneuvers were conducted to prepare Georgian units for service in Afghanistan. However, despite the official completion of the Afghan operation, the United States and the alliance countries do not intend to abandon this militaristic tradition, thereby fueling the explosive situation in the region.
What is the statement of the commander of the US Navy in Europe and Africa, Admiral Robert Burke, who made further threats against Russia.
In general, the rhetoric of the NATO command staff has long been surprising. One gets the impression that the generals of the North Atlantic alliance are absolutely not familiar with even the basics of elementary politeness.
Apparently, this is not part of the set of mandatory liberal values that Washington and Brussels are going to teach the whole world, including Russia.
“It can be argued that Russia is provoking us to strike first. We’re not going to be the first to do it without provocation, but I’m not going to require my commanders to take the first blow to the jaw”, Burke said.
Let’s leave aside the general’s rhetoric and return to the facts. At the end of June, the destroyer Defender entered the territory of the Russian Federation without warning in the area of Cape Fiolent in the Black Sea. After several attempts to contact the ship’s command, Russian border guards fired warning shots in accordance with all international standards. Only then did the Defender change course and left Russian waters. The next day, the movement of the Dutch frigate Evertsen in the direction of the Kerch Strait was noted. Military fighters and bombers were launched into the air. Then the frigate changed course and passed the Kerch Strait.
So who is provoking whom? The habit of blaming everyone and everything for their own sins has become such a common oratorical device among the NATO bosses that they do not even pay attention to the real state of affairs.
