Afghan president links worsening security situation to US withdrawal

Ashraf Ghani said he respects Washington’s decision but knows it will have consequences

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has linked the deteriorating security situation in the country to the sudden decision by the United States to withdraw its forces from Afghan territories. This was reported by Afghan 1TV channel on Monday.

“In the past three months, we have been faced with an unexpected situation due to the sudden decision of the US to withdraw its troops”, –  the channel quoted Ghani as saying. The president also added that he respects Washington’s decision but knows that it will have consequences.

On 14 April, US President Joe Biden announced his decision to end the operation in Afghanistan, which has become the longest overseas military campaign in US history. Against this backdrop, the security situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating as supporters of the radical Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) are stepping up their offensive in a number of areas.
