The US House Oversight and Government Reform Committee previously said the former president allegedly asked the agency’s leaders to “just say the election wasn’t clean”
Former US President Donald Trump fundamentally disagrees with allegations in the US Congress that he tried to pressure Justice Department officials late last year to overturn the results of the November 2020 presidential election. The politician said so in a statement issued on Saturday.
“In fact, it’s just the opposite. The documents were meant to uphold the integrity and honesty of the election and the sanctity of our vote <…>. Our country survived an incredibly corrupt presidential election, and it is time for Congress and others to examine how this was allowed to happen, rather than investigate those who are exposing this massive fraud on the American people”, – the statement said.
On Friday, the US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released a statement saying that Trump was pressuring senior Justice Department officials. The committee came to this conclusion after handwritten notes circulated by chair Carolyn Maloney (Democrat of New York State) of then acting Deputy Justice Secretary – US Attorney General Richard Donohue on December 27 last year, which relate to his phone conversation with Trump and Jeffrey Rosen, who was acting head of the DOJ at the time.
Trump allegedly asked the DOJ chiefs to “simply say that the election was not clean and provide the rest” to him and his fellow party members in Congress.
The next US presidential election was held on 3 November 2020. On 14 December 2020, the Electoral College approved the results, according to which Democrat Joe Biden won. His inauguration took place on 20 January. Trump and other Republicans have alleged systematic voting irregularities. They have repeatedly appealed to the courts to demand recounts in a number of states. However, the Republicans’ actions were unsuccessful and their claims were rejected by the courts, including the US Supreme Court. On 20 January, Biden was inaugurated.
