Ukraine’s security must become one of the priorities of Germany’s foreign policy, Armin Lachet, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who is one of the candidates for Germany’s chancellorship, said in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita
Lachet stressed that Berlin could impose sanctions against Moscow if Russia “uses the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to put pressure on Ukraine”.
“If Russia takes aggressive actions against Ukraine again, Germany will take action at the national level and advocate punitive measures in the European Union”, – Lachet said.
He said Ukraine’s sovereignty and security should allegedly become “a priority of German foreign policy”. The candidate for Chancellor of Germany said that the agreement on the “Nord Stream – 2” made by Washington and Berlin will allow “to hold Russia accountable for its destructive activities”.
As previously reported by News Front, the US and Germany released a joint statement on Nord Stream – 2, in which Washington acknowledged that the project is effectively completed, while Berlin pledged to support Kiev in the energy sector in case of possible “pressure” from Russia.
“Nord Stream 2” involves the construction of two gas pipelines from Russia’s shores to Germany through the Baltic Sea. The US has actively opposed the completion of the project because it wants to supply Europe with its own liquefied gas.
