Expert: troop withdrawal from Afghanistan is only linked to US domestic problems

Andrei Serenko, head of the Center for Afghan Policy Studies, explained why US troops are leaving Afghanistan in such a hurry

He discussed this topic in a conversation with the correspondent of Ukraina.ru. The expert noted that this project is purely domestic American and has little to do with Afghanistan.

Withdrawal of troops was planned back under President Barack Obama. But then it was discussed on a longer term with a more responsible approach. Donald Trump’s rise to power ruined the US relationship with official Afghanistan, and Joe Biden had to continue what his predecessors had started.

American society had long advocated an end to the war and in particular the return of its soldiers from Afghanistan. Biden and his team had to comply with this request.

“The U.S. simply put everyone in front of the fact. This was due to the peculiarities of the domestic political process in the United States, the struggle for votes, the fierce competition between Republicans and Democrats, the American elite’s request to overthrow Trump, and so on. America was preoccupied with its domestic affairs, and very hot ones at that. They did not care about Afghanistan or their allies,” Serenko said.

The expert summed up and stressed that the crisis around Afghanistan affects all countries in the region, NATO states and even Russia and China.
