Foreign Ministry: dialogue between Russia and the United States can prevent undermining the foundations of arms control

The comprehensive bilateral strategic dialogue, which the presidents of Russia and the United States agreed at their meeting in Geneva, can help overcome the dangerous tendency to undermine the foundations of the international arms control architecture.

This was announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Offensive Arms (START).

Exactly 30 years ago, Russia and the United States signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-1). The document was signed on July 31, 1991 during a meeting between Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and US President George W. Bush in Moscow.

“The Russian Federation has consistently advocated the strengthening of strategic stability and international security by political and diplomatic methods, including the conclusion of relevant treaties and agreements. This is of particular importance at a time when deliberate efforts are being made to undermine the international arms control architecture and undermine its foundations”, reads a statement posted on the agency’s website.

The ministry believes that overcoming this extremely dangerous tendency can be facilitated by a comprehensive bilateral strategic dialogue, which the presidents of Russia and the United States agreed on at their meeting on June 16 this year, and the first round of which took place on July 28 this year. in Geneva.
