A wide-angle Russian telescope will be installed in Cuba

Over the past two years, the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy of the country has strengthened scientific cooperation with several divisions of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to TASS with reference to the Granma newspaper, specialists from the Cuban Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy are installing a Russian automated wide-angle telescope, which will be used for observing space bodies and tracking space debris.

Zulia Barsena Fonseca, deputy director for science at the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy, told the publication that “the institution pays special attention to research on solar activity, taking into account the impact it has on many areas of modern life.” According to her, the main focus in this is on the appearance and evolution of sunspots”, the message says.

According to the deputy director, “over the past two years, scientific cooperation has been strengthened with several divisions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in particular, in the field of updating technologies for observing and monitoring solar activity, as well as from celestial objects located at different distances from the Earth.”
