Bloomberg: US Senators Demand New Sanctions Against Nord Stream-2

A group of Republican senators are demanding from the administration of US President Joe Biden to impose new sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, threatening to block the approval of two candidates for positions in the Treasury.

“The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline directly harms the national security interests of the United States and our allies and partners. If this project is completed, it will increase the detrimental influence of Vladimir Putin on Europe, destabilize Ukraine’s fragile security and contribute to further Russian aggression”, – said in a letter from the Republicans to Finance Minister Janet Yellen.

Republican senators said they would oppose the candidacies of Brian Nelson and Elizabeth Rosenberg, who were nominated for sanctions oversight positions if their demands are not met.

As previously reported by News Front, the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from the coast of Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea is now 99% complete. According to experts, the first gas can go through the pipeline this year. Washington actively opposes the completion of the project, as it wants to supply its own liquefied gas to European countries.
