Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un also agreed to help rebuild trust and strengthen bilateral relations
Republic of Korea President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have agreed to reopen a direct line of communication between Seoul and Pyongyang and also agreed to help restore trust and strengthen bilateral relations, TASS reported.
“According to the South Korean leader’s administration, the two heads of state have exchanged messages repeatedly since April this year. It has been stressed that it was through these contacts that an agreement was reached to restore the communication channel that Pyongyang unilaterally abandoned in 2020”, – the statement said.
The DPRK blocked all communication lines with South Korea on June 9 last year in response to the unauthorised sending of balloons with propaganda leaflets across the border by activists of a South Korean non-governmental organisation. Pyongyang viewed the actions as a hostile act that violated the bilateral peace agreements. In a retaliatory move, all phones at the permanent inter-Korean communications office, including the North-South military communications channel, as well as the leadership hotline connecting the Workers’ Party of Korea Central Committee building and the presidential residence of the Republic of Korea, were shut down.
