Tikhanovskaya upset that the US never made clear promises to impose sanctions against Minsk

The so-called “leader of the Belarusian opposition” expressed hope that Washington would soon respond to the meeting

According to TASS, Svetlana Tihanovskaya said after talks with representatives of the U.S. administration in Washington that she “can’t promise” to impose the U.S. sectoral sanctions against Minsk.

“This time we talked about sectoral sanctions. I very much hope that in the near future the United States will respond to our meeting and sectoral sanctions will be imposed. I can’t promise anything but very hopeful”, –  she said at a meeting with the Belarusian diaspora in New York.

Tihanovskaya notes that it’s “difficult to get any promises” at such meetings. She added that she’d also made an effort to explain that although now there are not such big protests in Belarus as in August-September 2020, the fight of the opposition supporters against the government is going on.

Recall that Tikhanovskaya has been in the US since 18 July. Last week in Washington she met with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland and US State Department adviser Derek Scholle. According to a State Department statement, “part of the meeting” was attended by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Tikhanovska also met separately with US Assistant to the President for National Security Jake Sullivan.
