According to RIA Novosti, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the situation in the Black Sea region is “artificially whipped up” and Moscow intends to closely monitor the implementation of the Montreux Convention.
“We will continue to closely monitor the situation with how the provisions of the convention are being implemented in practice, including in terms of limiting the total maximum tonnage during transit, as well as the maximum tonnage of warships of non-coastal powers in the Black Sea and the duration of their stay in the Black Sea area,” the Russian diplomats.
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted the special role of Turkey, which can control the passage of military vessels through the straits. In addition, the department stressed that Moscow is conducting a regular dialogue with Ankara. In particular, Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the issues of proper execution of the clauses of the treaty on June 30 in Antalya.
