Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador called on the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to consider the issue of deeper integration within the region and the creation of an analogue of the European Union, TASS reports.
“The proposal is to create something similar to the European Union, taking into account our history, reality and identities. If we think in the same vein, we cannot rule out the replacement of the Organization of American States (OAS) with a truly independent organization that will not be someone’s servant, but will act as an intermediary at the request and with the consent of the conflicting parties in matters related to human rights”, – said Obrador at the summit of the foreign ministers of the states – members of the Community of Latin America and the Caribbean, which is taking place in Mexico City.
The Mexican President stressed that at the moment his proposal may “sound like a utopia”, but urged to remember that “if you do not set yourself higher goals for the future, nothing can be achieved and therefore it is worth trying”. As an example of successful cooperation and interaction, he cited the trade and economic agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada.
