MP Iryna Vereshchuk said that Ukraine is considering rapprochement with NATO as “compensation” for losses from the launch of the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline
According to Vereshchuk, the Swedish parliament is now considering a proposal to join the North Atlantic Alliance together with Ukraine. The MP argues that such a decision might be supported by some politicians in Europe and granting Kiev a Membership Action Plan (MAP) to NATO would be a “big win” against the background of the launch of Nord Stream 2.
Earlier, Germany and the United States released a joint statement on Nord Stream 2 in which Berlin pledged high-level cooperation with Washington to ensure that “the United States and the EU have the appropriate tools and mechanisms to respond to Russian attempts to use energy as a weapon”.
“Nord Stream 2 involves the construction of two strings of the pipeline from the Russian coast to Germany through the Baltic Sea. The US is actively opposing the completion of the project because it wants to supply Europe with its own liquefied gas.
