Politico: Washington asks Kiev to refrain from criticising Nord Stream 2

U.S. authorities have called on Ukraine to refrain from speaking out about Nord Stream 2. This is reported by the newspaper Politico, citing its sources

According to the newspaper, Washington has pointed out to Kiev that public criticism of the Nord Stream – 2 pipeline by the Ukrainian authorities may harm relations between the United States and Ukraine. Additionally, the US administration has demanded that Ukraine stop discussing potential plans of the United States and Germany with representatives of the US Congress, many of whom have been harshly critical of the pipeline and demand sanctions aimed at stopping the project.

According to Politico experts, US pressure on Ukraine to end criticism of Nord Stream 2 could meet serious resistance. The paper’s sources close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that official Kiev believes Washington could still stop the construction of the pipeline by applying tougher sanctions.

Reuters earlier reported that Germany and the United States intend to announce in the coming days an agreement on disputed issues regarding the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. However, sanctions against Russia are also not ruled out if Moscow allegedly starts using energy resources to put pressure on Ukraine.
