EU to give money to Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova for “democratic reforms”

European Council President Charles Michel has talked about new financial assistance to the countries of the so-called Eastern Partnership

European Council President Charles Michel said on Monday at an international conference that opened in Batumi that the Eastern Partnership program is the locomotive that promotes economic growth and prosperity in Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova, and the EU will provide them with unprecedented assistance, Interfax reported.

“I want to lay emphasis on our future cooperation and to announce that we will give unprecedented financial assistance to the Eastern Partnership countries, amounting to 2.3 billion euros, which will make it possible to mobilize another 17 billion euros”, –  Michel said.

At the same time, he said, democratic reforms must continue in the Eastern Partnership countries.

“Democratic governance is the key to having the rule of law, justice, the fight against corruption. It is not only a political necessity, it is an opportunity that this tool provides”, –  Michel said.

He also said that another Eastern Partnership summit will be held in December this year.

“We promise that the European Union will remain a reliable and strong partner for your countries, and we hope that you will deliver on the commitments you have made, not to please Brussels, but for the interests of your nations”, – Michel said.

Now it is a small matter, Kiev, Tbilisi and Chisinau should find a way to “please” the European “patrons”.
