The administration of US President Joe Biden is preparing to impose new sanctions against China on July 16 due to the situation in Hong Kong, Reuters reported.
According to the publication, financial sanctions will be imposed against seven representatives of the Chinese authorities: the US State Department will publish recommendations for international companies on the existing risks of doing business in Hong Kong. At a meeting with the German Chancellor, US President Joe Biden said the situation in Hong Kong was worsening.
Sources told Reuters that possible sanctions measures are still under consideration and may change significantly. According to one of the agency’s sources, the White House is preparing a separate executive order from the president regarding immigration from Hong Kong, but the likelihood that it will be used is currently extremely small.
According to the Joint Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984, from July 1, 1997, in accordance with the concept of “one country, two systems”, the Chinese government became responsible for the foreign policy and defense of the autonomy. Hong Kong, in turn, enjoys the right to self-government and exercises administrative, legislative and judicial powers.
Britain and other Western countries have accused Beijing of violating the declaration over the reform of the Hong Kong election system and the national security law. China argues that these measures are necessary to combat separatism, terrorism and the undermining of state power. In addition, Beijing has repeatedly warned the West against interfering in the internal politics of the state.
