Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation on Wednesday with U.S. Presidential Special Envoy for Climate Affairs John Kerry, who is in Moscow, the Kremlin press service said
The Kremlin said Kerry briefed Putin on past meetings with his Russian counterparts, during which various aspects of the international climate agenda were discussed.
The Kremlin said in a statement that Vladimir Putin said the Russian Federation attaches great importance to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and favors a depoliticized and professional dialogue on the issue.
The press-service added that in this connection, the conversation touched upon issues of preparation to the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12, considering the national priorities on decarbonisation.
In addition, in the context of the current Russian chairmanship of the Arctic Council, views were exchanged on the prospects for bilateral environmental cooperation in the Arctic.
The Kremlin also noted that climate issues are one of the areas in which Russia and the US share common interests and close approaches.
Kerry began a three-day visit to Moscow on Monday and has already been received by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Earlier on July 1, Lavrov and Kerry had a telephone conversation during which they discussed US-Russian cooperation on climate and agreed to continue intensive bilateral contacts in this area as a follow-up to the June 16 summit in Geneva.
