Lieutenant General Austin Scott Miller, commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, has handed over authority to General Kenneth Frank Mackenzie, head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM). This was announced today, July 12, Ariana News reported
The ceremony was held in Kabul. Miller’s surrender marks the symbolic end of the U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan.
Austin Scott Miller has commanded the military coalition in Afghanistan since August 2018, longer than any previous commander in that position. General McKenzie, as head of CENTCOM, will continue to operate from CENTCOM headquarters in Tampa, Florida, and from his forward headquarters at Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, Qatar.
Miller is now expected to resign, three Pentagon officials said, NBC reported.
