Der Spiegel reveals details of possible deal on Nord Stream-2 between the USA and Germany

The German side offered three options for helping Ukraine.

As the tg-channel “Mediatekhnolog” writes, the magazine “Der Spiegel” discloses the details of the negotiations of the deal between Germany and the United States concerning the further work of “Nord Stream-2”.

“Washington and Berlin have been holding closed negotiations for several months now, the purpose of which is to sign an agreement under which Germany will make some concessions and the United States will lift sanctions. So far, all conversations revolve around support and compensation to Ukraine for the impending loss of gas traffic, – the channel experts say, – Three main options have been developed, which is most interesting, all three are quite mocking for the former Soviet republic”.

1. Germany is modernizing part of the Ukrainian energy sector.

“The fact is that most of the Ukrainian thermal power plants are still coal-fired, this is considered energy inefficient and dangerous for the environment. Therefore, in Germany, most of the CHPPs have been switched to gas supply, and this is the only modernization that Berlin can offer, that is, in fact, to increase Ukraine’s dependence on gas supplies”, – the authors of the channel remind.

2. To expand the production of hydrogen in Ukraine.

“The topic is trendy and lucrative, the global demand for hydrogen is growing. The only problem is that the most widespread method of hydrogen production is conversion from natural gas, that is, again increasing dependence on gas imports”, – experts say.

3. The Germans want to modernize the Ukrainian gas transportation system, the dilapidation of which is constantly complained about from Kiev.

“The most Jesuitical, a real mockery”, –  the journalists are sure.

“The only problem is that the GTS is in perfect condition, and all the cries about its deterioration are a cover for the legal theft of gas. The more worn out the network, the more allowances for leaks, all these “leaks” enter the domestic Ukrainian market, costing Naftogaz free of charge. Modernization of the GTS will result in the loss of several hundred million dollars. This is, of course, if the traffic is saved, and so Ukraine has every chance to get a brand-new pipe, through which there will be nothing to pump”.

According to Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov, the situation is no-win for Ukraine.

“Wherever you go, there is a wedge for Ukraine. And then the Turkish Stream started working, and Hungary will receive gas through Serbia, and Ukraine, with its psychic attacks, is no longer needed at all. So the prospects for Kiev and the Ukrainian GTS are the most “rosy”: soon, apparently, no one will need it”, –  commented on the publication in the German edition of Pushkov.
