The leaderships of Russia, Iran and China are considering various options for action in Afghanistan in connection with the end of the US military mission in the country, writes the American magazine Newsweek.
Earlier it became known that the last US military left the Bagram airbase, which was the central hub of operations of the United States and its allies in Afghanistan for twenty years. It is noted that over such a long period, the coalition led by Washington was never able to defeat the Taliban *. During the campaign, about two thousand US troops were killed.
Last year, the White House and the Taliban signed a peace agreement in Doha that calls for the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and the start of an inter-Afghan dialogue.
“Recently, against the background of the completion of the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, we observe an increase in the activity of the movement. Especially in the northern and northeastern provinces, in the immediate vicinity of the borders of the Central Asian states. In this part of Afghanistan, over the past 10 days, more than 30 districts have come under the control of the militants”, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a briefing.
Zakharova expressed concern that instability in Afghanistan could lead to a humanitarian crisis and an increase in the number of refugees, which will negatively affect the bordering countries.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzadeh also acknowledged the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and announced Tehran’s readiness to facilitate negotiations in order to end pressure on some ethnic groups in Afghanistan. In addition, Zhang Jun, China’s representative to the UN, noted that the withdrawal of foreign troops led to a sharp aggravation of the situation in the country.
“We need to create a normal, inclusive, as they say now, government in Afghanistan, capable of dealing with these tasks on its territory. Moscow will make every effort to ensure that peaceful inter-Afghan negotiations take place, including cooperating with the American side”, stressed Zamir Kabulov, the special envoy of the Russian president to the Middle East republic, on the air of the RBK channel.
