Media: Two people detained in Hong Kong for calling to attack police officers

A 20-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man posted comments on social media and called for police stations to be set on fire

Hong Kong police on Sunday detained two radical activists for inciting online attacks on law enforcement officers. This was reported by radio station RTHK.

A 20-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man had posted comments on social media calling for police officers to be attacked and police stations set on fire. Such messages began to emerge after an incident involving a knife attack on a law enforcement officer on the evening of July 1, the evening of the celebration of the 24th anniversary of the enclave’s transition to Chinese sovereignty.

A policeman on duty in the street was attacked by a radical who stabbed him in the back. The attacker subsequently committed suicide. In a suicide note, he motivated his act by protesting against the passing of the National Security Act a year ago in Hong Kong.

The incident sparked a huge public outcry and discussion on social media. Law enforcement authorities indicated that they would “not turn a blind eye to attempts to incite hatred and violence” via the internet.
