The former US president said that he achieved significantly better results in the last election than he did four years earlier
Former U.S. President Donald Trump said that under the current electoral system, the U.S. will become a “banana republic”. The Republican voiced this opinion on Wednesday at a meeting with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and lawmakers from that state.
Trump noted that he did much better in the last presidential election than he did four years earlier. “But the outcome of the vote count this time was slightly in their [the Democrats’] favour,” pointed out the former White House chief, who is in Texas as part of his trip to the US southern border. The November 2020 election was won by Democrat Joe Biden.
“We need to get the electoral system in order because otherwise we will lose our country. Soon it will be a banana republic, a third world country”, – Trump pointed out. – “Our country is sick in many ways. It’s sick both in terms of the electoral system and in terms of the border situation”, – the former president concluded.
Trump and other Republicans have alleged systematic voting irregularities since the 2020 election. They have repeatedly appealed to the courts demanding recounts in a number of states. However, the Republicans’ actions were unsuccessful and their claims were rejected by courts, including the US Supreme Court. On 20 January, Democrat Biden was inaugurated.
In many US states where Republicans are in power, attempts have been made in recent months to tighten controls on voting. Democrats have criticised these initiatives. They accuse Republicans of seeking to obstruct the voting process in their political interests.
