Pedro Sanchez says the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, of which he is the leader, will never support a plebiscite on autonomy self-determination
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez considers it absurd to talk about the possibility of a referendum on Catalonia’s independence. Prime Minister made the statement in an interview to TV channel LaSexta on Thursday.
According to the prime minister, the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, of which he is the leader, will never support a plebiscite on Catalonia’s self-determination. “We are talking about absurdity,” Sanchez assured. “There is no constitution that recognises the right to divide the territory of a nation,” he clarified.
On Tuesday, the Spanish prime minister and Catalan cabinet chief Pere Aragonés held their first meeting in Madrid since the new leader of the autonomy was confirmed on 21 May this year. At the end of its results Aragonese, who supports the withdrawal of the Kingdom, said that in September in Barcelona, a meeting between representatives of the regional and central governments on the settlement of the Catalan crisis. He has also once again advocated a plebiscite on the independence of the region.
