A man carrying a Russian flag was beaten up by Ukrainian fans on the Ukrainian side of the Euro 2020 football match Ukraine vs Sweden. A member of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth Affairs Dmitry Svishchev called for an immediate investigation into the incident
Before the Ukraine-Sweden match, which took place on 29 June, a fan with a Russian flag, who was in the same stand with Ukrainian fans, was beaten up in one of the stands of the Scottish stadium Hampden Park. Photos emerged on Facebook showing the Russian national team shirt the young man was wearing torn, the flag missing and the fan himself holding on to his jaw.
“It doesn’t matter that much whether he’s Russian or not. Big respect to the guy who wasn’t afraid to come to the podium to the Ukrainian fans with a flag and wearing a Russian national team uniform. Obviously he supported Ukraine. Instead of taking all the negatives and problems away for joy, the Ukrainian fans took it and spoiled the holiday for themselves and others. What is the point?”, – Svishchev said.
He also noted that there is a security service and facial recognition system at the stand, which will allow finding and punishing the violators. The MP called on Russian diplomats to ask the police to investigate the incident.
