State Department does not recommend US citizens to travel to Russia and Crimea for a number of reasons

The ministry especially advises against visiting the North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus.

The US State Department has extended recommendations for citizens of the state not to travel to Russia due to the alleged “terrorism and persecution”, as well as the limited capacity of the US Embassy.

This was reported in a statement published on the agency’s website.

“Don’t travel to Russia because of terrorism, harassment by Russian government security officials, the embassy’s limited ability to assist US citizens in Russia, and arbitrary enforcement of local law. Also reconsider the possibility of travel due to COVID-19 and related restrictions”, – the State Department said.

In addition, Americans are warned against travel to the North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, because of “terrorism, kidnapping and the risk of civil unrest”.

They also do not recommend going to Crimea, allegedly “because of the occupation of Ukrainian territory by Russia and abuse by the occupation authorities”. Americans are warned that they risk becoming “victims of harassment, abuse and extortion”.

“All US government personnel must carefully consider the need to travel to Russia. Russian security services have arrested US citizens on bogus charges, denied them fair and transparent treatment, and convicted them in secret trials or without providing evidence”, – the statement said.
