The US leader also stressed that the bills would “reaffirm the role of science in addressing serious problems such as the climate change-induced crisis”
Two bills passed by the US House of Representatives on June 28 to encourage research and development (R&D) in the US will help the country outperform China and the rest of the world for years to come. US President Joe Biden expressed this view in a written statement released by the White House.
“Decades of neglect and reduced investment have put us at a competitive disadvantage as countries around the world, such as China, pour in funds and deliberately develop new technologies and industries, leaving us at real risk of being left behind”, – the president said.
“We need historic – once-in-a-generation – investments in our competitiveness that support R&D, innovation, semiconductors and advanced manufacturing to grow our economy and create good-paying middle-class jobs in every corner of America. By restoring these domestic sources of strength, we can outperform China and the rest of the world for years to come”, – the American leader believes. He stressed that the bills passed by congressmen would lead to “vital investments in R&D, science and [America’s] economic competitiveness, and reaffirm the role of science in addressing major challenges such as the climate change-induced crisis”.
Biden recalled that in early June, the Senate of Congress approved a bill that would allocate $250 billion from the country’s budget to confront China in the tech sphere. The funds will be used to support NASA, the Departments of Commerce and Energy in their work on advanced technological research. The President stressed that he would sign the three bills if they were approved by both houses of Congress.
