German Chancellor candidates not ready to promise Ukraine NATO membership

The contenders for the post of German Chancellor believe that they cannot promise Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

This was announced by candidates from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Armin Laschet and from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Olaf Scholz.

“This can be frivolously promised. However, the reality looks different”, – Laschet said.

In addition, he believes that so far nothing indicates that Germany may send weapons to Ukraine.

His rival Scholz believes that before dreaming of NATO, Kiev must carry out internal reforms.

Recently, Ukraine’s dreams of joining the Alliance were commented on by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova. She stressed that the NATO countries themselves brought the country to a complete loss of sovereignty, and now refuse to accept it into their ranks, pointing to legal restrictions.
