Seoul intends to continue pushing for renewed dialogue with Pyongyang

Dialogue is the best way to ensure stable control of the situation on the Korean peninsula, said a spokesman for South Korea’s unification ministry

The Republic of Korea will continue its efforts to resume dialogue with the DPRK. A representative of the South Korean unification ministry told a briefing for journalists in Seoul on Thursday.

“Dialogue and cooperation is the best way to ensure stable and peaceful control of the situation on the Korean Peninsula”, –  the official said. He thus commented on North Korean Foreign Minister Lee Sung-gwon’s remarks that Pyongyang was not even considering any contact with the US.

“Seoul’s position has been clarified many times and it remains unchanged. It is a desire for renewed dialogue between the South and the North, between the North and the US”, – the ministry spokesman stressed. – “It is too early to conclude that these statements reflect Pyongyang’s official position on dialogue. We have to closely monitor future developments”, – he said.

On Wednesday, the DPRK foreign minister told the CTAC news agency that Pyongyang was not even considering “the possibility of any contact with the US, considering it pointless and a waste of precious time.”

Lee Song Gwon added that his ministry fully supports the position of the deputy head of the propaganda and agitation department of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Kim Yo-jung, who is the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. She had earlier said that the US should be careful in interpreting signals coming from Pyongyang to avoid disappointment and false expectations.
