First verdict handed down in US Capitol assault case

A participant in the January riots in Washington has been given a suspended sentence, community service and a fine

According to The Associated Press (AP), a participant in January riots in Washington has been sentenced to probation, community service and a fine. It is noted that this is the first sentence handed down in the case of the storming of the Capitol by supporters of former US President Donald Trump.

At issue is Indiana resident Anna Morgan Lloyd, 49, who earlier pleaded guilty to participating in an illegal demonstration.

“I am ashamed that the events of the day were a savage display of violence”, – she said.

Lloyd was sentenced to three years’ probation, 120 hours of community service and a $500 fine. The prosecutor’s office noted that the woman had no history of violence and was not involved in preparing riots, so it was decided to limit the sentence to probation instead of the six months in jail she faced.

AP notes that a total of about 500 people are being tried in the D.C. riot case. A judge in the D.C. metropolitan area stressed that the remaining defendants should not expect all of them to avoid jail time.
