The Taliban* captured one of the sections on the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Politician Elena Panina announced this in her Telegram channel.
She added that the city of Sherkhan, which is located on the borders of the two states, was also taken without a fight.
“Thus, a new geopolitical reality has emerged: the Taliban movement has reached the border of a country party to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)”, – Panina wrote.
Against the background of the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, this development of events was highly anticipated. Back in May of this year, Russian leader Vladimir Putin visited Tajikistan and said that Moscow was strengthening the 201st military base (a Russian facility) and the troops of a partner country. The program is designed for several years.
The base in Tajikistan, which is immediately located in Dushanbe and Bokhtar, will operate under an agreement from 2021 until at least 2042. This is Russia’s largest military facility abroad.
