Protesters are unhappy with the government of Prime Minister Hichem Mechici and the abuse of police to suppress the protests
The clashes started in central Tunis and then moved to the Seyoumi area. Protesters threw chairs and stones at the police, who responded by kicking and beating them with sticks.
Protests erupted in Seyoumi on June 8 after a man arrested by police on suspicion of drug trafficking died in custody. The family accused the police of beating him to death. The Tunisian interior ministry denied the allegation.
Human rights activists said police abuses threatened to undermine the democratic gains made since the overthrow of the repressive regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali ten years ago.
The release of video footage of a police sweep and the beating of a young man has sparked widespread anger in the country and doubts about the effectiveness of police reforms carried out since the 2011 revolution.
