CDU party chief calls for more German involvement in Africa and the Mediterranean

Armin Laschet said that involvement in operations abroad requires a mandate from the UN and a clear strategy to complete

Germany must take more responsibility in the field of security policy in regions such as the Mediterranean and Africa. Armin Laschet, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and candidate for Chancellor of Germany, said this in an interview published in the Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday.

“In Africa and the Mediterranean region, Germany needs to do more. The security policy tasks are not getting any smaller”, –  he said. The politician added that involvement in operations abroad requires a mandate from the UN and a clear strategy for completion.

Asked whether the FRG would be willing to continue moving towards NATO’s target of allocating 2 per cent of GDP to defence, Lachet said: “If we have agreed on something internationally, we need to implement it.” “The new American president [Joe Biden] has opened a window for a renewal of the transatlantic relationship – we must use this to strengthen democracy around the world,” the CDU chief added.

The new chancellor will be determined in Germany following the results of the Bundestag elections, which will be held on September 26. The party that gets the most votes will be entitled to choose a coalition partner and appoint the head of government. The CDU is ahead of other political forces in the ratings.
