Russia’s stealthy submarines pose a threat, creating a “devilish problem” for the West, Forbes senior columnist Lauren Thompson said.
In his opinion, the United States can offer Europe a “cheap way” to defend itself against Russian naval submarines.
“Now the White House has not only the opportunity to strengthen NATO, but also to promote the national industry. <…> It seems that this does not even require new funds from the federal budget,” Thompson said.
The observer explained that there is currently no modern submarine detection equipment in Europe. According to the article, the EU is using outdated aircraft, while the US is able to provide P-8 Poseidon anti-submarine patrol aircraft to its allies. This will help combat the “Russian threat”, reduce the burden on the US Navy and provide thousands of American jobs, Thompson said.
He stressed that the purchase of American aircraft will be “an excellent opportunity” for the Biden administration to strengthen Washington’s leadership and “inexpensively” solve several strategic tasks at once.
Statements about the Russian threat are regularly heard from the United States and European countries. According to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the West is well aware that Moscow has no plans to attack anyone, but is using the pretext to deploy more troops near the Russian borders.
